They grow up so fast, don’t they? It is always a hard pill to swallow when you realize your young child is now a teenager who is ready to drive. Knowing that your teen will now be in the driver seat, where you typically sit, instantly turns on the nerves. It is a natural feeling to be a little scared, but it is also the driving force behind ensuring your teenager receives safety tips before getting too comfortable in the driver seat.
As a parent or guardian, you play a vital role in giving your teen driving lessons so they understand the rules of the road. It is also extremely important to ensure teens are provided with information to make them better, safer drivers when they are out on the road.
Sit down with your teenager and provide them a copy of a safety tip checklist. Some of the items may seem obvious or basic, but nonetheless, review everything on the list with them until they fully understand the importance of all of the information listed. You may find that you have even more items to add to this list, but it is a great start. Also, be sure to include alternatives for situations like #4. Encourage them to always have a designated driver. Emphasize the importance of not being the driver and to call you, a cab or another driving service like Uber or Lyft.
